For developers, "commit" usually means git commit.
In extreme sports like parkour and climbing, commit means something different. It refers to steeling yourself before attempting something dangerous. This kind of commit carries enormous weight, because there's no concept of a soft reset back to before the commit.
If I've decided to do something — if I've committed — I have to pull it off without a shred of doubt. Even the slightest hesitation leads straight to failure.
Really, all of life's major decisions work like the commit in extreme sports. Once you've decided, you can't let doubt in. The moment it creeps in, even what would have worked doesn't. I think a little narcissism actually helps here.
Whether you can commit on your own terms is what separates prey from predator in life. The predator commits by choice; the prey is committed by force. There's no such thing as a life without commits. Risk isn't something you can dodge just by trying to avoid it.
